AVBS Winter Clothing Guide
It comes around every year but we still find ourselves shivering in disbelief at just how cold winter can be. For some, it’s a period of hibernation where the effort to get out and ride is severely outweighed by the desire to stay indoors. However, it’s just like Scottish comedian, Billy Connolly, always said: “There’s no such thing as bad weather – only the wrong clothes.” With winter setting in fast, we couldn’t agree with Billy more, so here are a few things that’ll see you through a cold season of winter mountain biking.
The new ION Hybrid Jacket is a shop favourite. Designed for wet weather riding, this jacket uses a 3-layer laminate and double weave fabric system which basically means it’s a great balance between being water-resistant and breathable. This jacket is available in store for £170.
If you’re looking for something that’s reliable and suitable for taking on winter, then the new Endura SingleTrack Jacket is another great winter riding option. Retailing for £120, this jacket has a waterproof rating up to 10,000 and a breathability rating of 20,000 by using a 3-layer system which helps regulate core body temperatures. The women’s version of this jacket is also available in-store for £120.
We now stock the new Endura Windchill Gilet for those of you who prefer a little more versatility in clothing and free range of arm movement, available in the shop for £60.00
Complementing the ION Traze jacket is the ION Traze bike shorts. Protecting you from rain, puddles and mud, these shorts are constructed with 4-way stretch fabric with a 3-layer fabric system. These have a waterproof rating of 20,000 and a breathability rating of 20,000. Available in store for £145.
The Endura MT500 Spray trousers are a staple for many mountain bikers who ride in winter. Retailing for £110 in-store, these trousers are lightweight with 4-way stretch fabric and a DWR coating to help keep you dry, however, they are NOT fully waterproof. Women’s MT500 trousers are also available with the same fabrics and features.
Hands, feet and head. These are the areas where we feel the cold and where heat escapes from the most. Fortunately, there are plenty of quality products in the shop that will keep you warm and dry for many miles to come.
SealSkinz Waterproof All-Weather Mid Socks are the big Daddy of dry feet. Using layers of technical fabric to keep the moisture out, these socks are lined with cosy merino wool for warmth and a Hydrostop feature to help prevent water ingress. Available in the Bike Shed for £37.50.
Endura also has their version of waterproof socks, the Hummvee Waterproof socks, which retail in the shop for £30.00. These are both breathable and waterproof with a rating of 8,000.
If you’re looking to keep your hands nice and warm on winter rides, then we recommend the Ride 100% Brisker gloves. Available at the Afan Valley Bike Shed for £27.00, these gloves use neoprene and microfibre fabrics to ensure breathability and warmth. If you’re looking for waterproof technology then the Ride 100% Hydromatic Brisker gloves are ideal for you, available in-store for £35.00.
Winter riding isn’t really complete without a good sturdy mudguard to keep your face cleaner and your bum drier. We stock ProGuards in the store from just £25.00. Constructed from durable plastic, these mudguards come with strong zip-ties for fitting and pre-cut holes which allow for a snug and accurate fit.
They are just a few things that’ll make winter riding comfortable, warm and dry for you this season, although, we have much more in store for you to browse. Remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather…
